  • Collaborate with content and engineering partners to implement SEO recommendations and prioritize impact
  • Build and maintain SEO reporting that tracks progress toward goals and highlights actionable insights

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on experience with SEO keyword research and search intent mapping
  • Demonstrated ability to perform on-page SEO optimization (titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal linking)
  • Experience running technical SEO audits and addressing crawl/indexation issues
  • Proficiency with SEO analytics and reporting using tools such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console
  • Ability to measure and improve organic performance using KPI dashboards and experimentation-ready insights

Nice to have

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Technical SEO execution · 22%
Mid-level independence requires handling crawlability and indexation issues with practical troubleshooting. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Identifies technical issues but cannot explain likely root causes or the next steps to validate fixes.
  • Meets the bar: Runs technical audits and explains how to investigate crawl/indexation problems and implement fixes.
  • Strong: Diagnoses recurring technical issues using evidence, coordinates implementation, validates indexing outcomes, and documents prevention steps.

Keyword intent strategy · 20%
SEO success depends on targeting the right terms with the right intent and building plans tied to outcomes. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Selects keywords without clear intent or without mapping to existing content stages.
  • Meets the bar: Groups keywords by intent and maps them to specific pages or content opportunities with a documented rationale.
  • Strong: Builds intent clusters tied to measurable KPIs and recommends content/optimization moves that align with observed search demand and page performance.

On-page optimization · 18%
On-page improvements directly affect relevance signals, CTR, and rankings for targeted queries. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Applies superficial changes (e.g., title length tweaks) without clear linkage to intent, CTR, or rankings.
  • Meets the bar: Optimizes titles, meta descriptions, headings, and internal links for target queries using a consistent checklist.
  • Strong: Chooses and implements on-page changes that improve CTR and/or rankings for specific query-page pairs, with before/after measurement.

  • Strong: Creates a repeatable improvement loop—test, measure, learn—and accelerates results by prioritizing the highest-impact opportunities.

Cross-functional communication · 12%

  • Strong: Builds consensus by translating SEO priorities into implementation-ready guidance and tracks commitments to completion.
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: SEO fundamentals and intent
SEO Lead · 45 min

  1. Walk through how you build a keyword strategy for a new topic: how do you determine search intent and map it to specific page types?
  2. Describe an on-page optimization you led. Which elements did you change (titles, meta descriptions, headings, internal links), and how did you decide what to change?
  3. How do you choose target queries for an existing page versus creating or updating content?
  4. Give an example of how you used performance data to refine keyword targeting or page prioritization. What did you change afterward?

Round 2: Technical SEO and measurement
Technical SEO Specialist · 45 min

  1. Describe a technical SEO audit you performed. What were the key findings and how did you validate root causes?
  2. Talk about a time you addressed crawl/indexation issues. What tools and evidence did you use to confirm the fix worked?
  3. How do you use Google Search Console and Google Analytics together to diagnose organic performance problems (e.g., ranking, indexing, CTR, engagement)?
  4. Explain how you set up and maintain an SEO reporting dashboard. What metrics do you include and how do you ensure the report drives decisions?

Round 3: Impact, independence, and collaboration
Hiring Manager · 45 min

  1. Tell us about an SEO initiative where you had a clear goal. How did you form a hypothesis, what actions did you take, and what results did you observe?
  2. How do you prioritize multiple SEO recommendations when time is limited? Describe your decision process and how you communicate priorities.
  3. Describe a situation where a partner needed to implement your recommendation (content or engineering). How did you make it easy to ship and how did you confirm it was implemented correctly?
  4. What would you do if organic impressions increased but clicks and engaged sessions did not? Walk through your diagnosis and next steps.

Red flags to watch for

  • Cannot explain how keyword intent maps to page purpose and measurable outcomes
  • Only provides high-level SEO advice without evidence of hands-on implementation and measurement
  • Over-focuses on reporting while showing little ability to connect findings to shipped actions
  • Gives vague responses about technical troubleshooting (crawl/indexing) or validation of fixes
  • Excessively relies on assumptions rather than adjusting based on data after changes
