SAP Developer

We are seeking a mid-level SAP Developer to design, build, and support SAP solutions that reliably meet business needs. You will work independently on well-defined enhancements and integrations, partnering with functional stakeholders to deliver changes safely and predictably.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain SAP application components, including ABAP enhancements and interfaces, aligned with agreed requirements.
  • Build and support integrations between SAP and other systems (e.g., via IDoc, RFC, APIs), ensuring correct data mapping and error handling.
  • Participate in solution design for enhancements and new functionality, translating functional requirements into technical approaches.
  • Perform unit-level testing and support QA/UAT by addressing defects and improving robustness of delivered changes.
  • Document technical designs, configuration references, and deployment steps for maintainability and handoff.
  • Analyze production issues related to SAP development and integrations, implement fixes, and prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with functional teams and other technical owners to ensure changes are delivered with appropriate controls and minimal disruption.

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on ABAP development experience (reports, dialogs, enhancements, and debugging)
  • Experience developing and supporting SAP integrations (IDoc/RFC/API patterns) with reliable data mapping
  • Ability to design and implement unit testing and support defect resolution for SAP changes
  • Experience troubleshooting SAP defects and production issues using logs/monitors and ABAP debugging
  • Proficiency with SAP transport and release management practices (versioned delivery and change safety)

Nice to have

  • Experience with SAP performance tuning (database access, buffering, runtime analysis)
  • Familiarity with SAP security concepts relevant to development (authorizations/roles and least privilege)

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Ship planned SAP enhancements independently
  • Reduce recurring integration-related issues
  • Improve change quality through testing discipline
  • Strengthen production support effectiveness

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver reliable SAP development and integration changes that improve business capabilities while maintaining production stability.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Ship planned SAP enhancements independently. Measure: deliver [N] SAP enhancement deliverables meeting agreed scope and acceptance criteria
  • Reduce recurring integration-related issues. Measure: reduce integration-related incidents by [X]%
  • Improve change quality through testing discipline. Measure: keep defects escaping to production below [X]% for delivered SAP changes
  • Strengthen production support effectiveness. Measure: reduce mean time to restore service by [X]% for SAP development/integration issues

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

ABAP development · 27%
The role requires solid hands-on ABAP to build and safely enhance SAP functionality. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Writes ABAP without using debugging to verify logic paths and data behavior.
  • Meets the bar: Uses ABAP development patterns and debugging to confirm correct output and handle common edge cases.
  • Strong: Independently develops and refines ABAP solutions with clear structure, strong debugging evidence, and maintainable design.

SAP integration delivery · 23%
Integrations are critical to ensure data correctness across systems and stable operations. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Implements integrations without clear mapping, leaving error handling unclear.
  • Meets the bar: Implements and validates integration flows with correct mapping and actionable error handling.
  • Strong: Designs robust integration behavior including retries/monitoring signals and resolves mapping issues quickly using evidence.

Testing and quality · 18%
Consistent unit testing and defect resolution prevents production regressions. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Relies primarily on downstream testing and struggles to explain what was tested and why.
  • Meets the bar: Creates unit-level tests or test cases, identifies likely failure modes, and collaborates effectively on defect fixes.
  • Strong: Builds a repeatable testing approach tied to requirements and documents results that guide fast defect resolution.

Production troubleshooting · 16%
The role must independently diagnose and address issues in SAP development and integrations. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Attempts fixes without isolating the root cause or validating changes against logs/monitors.
  • Meets the bar: Uses debugging and relevant SAP monitoring/log sources to isolate cause and implement targeted fixes.
  • Strong: Rapidly narrows root cause using multiple evidence sources, prevents recurrence, and communicates corrective actions clearly.

Transport and release discipline · 10%
Safe delivery depends on correct transport/version management practices. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Moves changes inconsistently across systems and cannot explain transport/version control approach.
  • Meets the bar: Delivers changes through appropriate transports and can explain what is included and why.
  • Strong: Manages releases with strong change control (clean separation, traceability, and rollback awareness) supported by examples.

Independent execution · 6%
Mid-level independence is required for well-defined work without close guidance. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Waits for frequent direction and cannot articulate progress against a plan.
  • Meets the bar: Breaks work into clear steps, asks targeted questions, and delivers within scope for well-defined tasks.
  • Strong: Proactively identifies risks, proposes options, and delivers predictably with minimal prompting.
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Core SAP build assessment
Senior SAP Engineer · 60 min

  1. Describe an ABAP change you implemented end-to-end. What requirement did it satisfy, what ABAP components did you build, and how did you validate correctness?
  2. Tell us about a time you developed an SAP integration (IDoc/RFC/API pattern). How did you handle data mapping, retries, and failure visibility?
  3. Walk through a specific debugging session: what symptom occurred, what evidence did you inspect (e.g., where did you look first), and what was the root cause?
  4. How do you structure ABAP code to make enhancements maintainable when requirements evolve?

Round 2: Quality and troubleshooting assessment
SAP Quality/Operations Lead · 60 min

  1. Explain your approach to unit testing or test-case design for SAP development. How do you decide what to test and how do you document results?
  2. Describe a production defect you fixed. What monitoring/log evidence did you use, how did you isolate the root cause, and what did you change to prevent recurrence?
  3. Give an example where an integration issue was caused by incorrect mapping or assumptions. How did you confirm the diagnosis and implement a durable fix?
  4. How do you collaborate with QA/UAT when defects are found—what information do you request and what evidence do you provide?

Round 3: Delivery practices and independence
Engineering Manager · 60 min

  1. Describe how you manage SAP transports and release delivery. How do you ensure the right code/config moves safely across systems?
  2. Tell us about a time you had to address a delivery risk (missing dependency, environment mismatch, or incomplete scope). What did you do to recover?
  3. Share an example of well-defined work you owned independently. How did you plan it, track progress, and communicate status/risks?
  4. What would you do if you discovered that a deployed change introduced an issue after transport completion? Walk us through your recovery approach.

Red flags to watch for

  • Cannot provide a concrete example of ABAP debugging used to validate and correct logic
  • Confuses integration concepts or cannot explain how mapping and failures are handled end-to-end
  • Describes testing as primarily manual or downstream only, with no clear strategy for unit-level quality
  • Lacks experience using SAP monitoring/log evidence to perform root-cause analysis for production issues
  • Has unreliable transport/release practices (e.g., unclear change contents, inconsistent movement across systems)
