Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Technical Discovery · 22%
Discovery quality drives accurate solution mapping and reduces back-and-forth during the sales cycle. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Asks surface-level questions and struggles to confirm success criteria, constraints, or integration requirements.
  • Meets the bar: Leads structured discovery, validates requirements, and clearly identifies constraints and success criteria.
  • Strong: Runs discovery that uncovers root causes, quantifies impact, documents decision criteria, and aligns stakeholders on technical scope.

Solution Architecture Mapping · 20%
Translating needs into architecture is core to credibility and proposal strength. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Provides generic capabilities without mapping to customer workflows, data flows, or integration points.
  • Meets the bar: Creates a clear mapping between requirements and product capabilities, including key integration touchpoints.
  • Strong: Designs a coherent end-to-end solution narrative (components, data flow, auth, error paths) that de-risks the evaluation.

Tailored Demos · 18%
Demos must directly reflect prospect priorities and drive actionable next steps. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Demos show features without tying to prospect use cases or success metrics.
  • Meets the bar: Demos are structured around the prospect’s workflows and highlight relevant outcomes.
  • Strong: Demos include scenario walkthroughs, handle edge cases, and explicitly connect each demo segment to the stated success criteria.

Technical Communication · 16%
Sales Engineers must communicate clearly to mixed technical/non-technical audiences. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Communication is unclear or overly technical; stakeholders leave without a shared understanding of scope.
  • Meets the bar: Explains technical concepts in plain language while preserving key technical details and decisions.
  • Strong: Creates clear technical narratives and diagrams that enable fast internal alignment and confident customer decisions.

Independent Execution · 12%
Mid-level independence is required to own technical execution on well-defined work across multiple deals. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Frequently needs step-by-step guidance; misses deadlines or leaves technical items unresolved.
  • Meets the bar: Plans and delivers assigned technical tasks on time with appropriate escalation.
  • Strong: Proactively manages deal technical workstreams, anticipates risks, and coordinates stakeholders without constant oversight.

Customer-Centric Problem Solving · 12%
The role requires diagnosing prospect issues and adapting solutioning to get to validation and close. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Focuses on product features even when they don’t address the customer’s constraints.
  • Meets the bar: Diagnoses gaps, proposes options, and aligns tradeoffs to customer priorities.
  • Strong: Leads structured troubleshooting, proposes mitigation paths, and secures customer buy-in on the best technical route.
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Discovery and Solution Mapping
Sales Engineering Manager · 45 min

  1. Tell me about a complex deal where you led technical discovery. How did you structure the questions and confirm success criteria?
  2. Walk through how you translate customer requirements into a solution approach. What artifacts do you produce (e.g., architecture narrative/diagram) and why?
  3. Describe an integration challenge you uncovered during discovery (authentication, data sync, webhooks, APIs). How did you adjust the proposed solution?

Round 2: Demo Craft and Technical Communication
Head of Sales Engineering · 45 min

  1. Describe a demo you tailored to a prospect’s specific workflow. What did you change from a generic demo and what outcome did it drive?
  2. How do you communicate technical tradeoffs to non-technical stakeholders without oversimplifying? Give an example.
  3. Tell me about a time you had to handle tough technical questions from a prospect. How did you respond and what did you do next?

Round 3: Independence and Customer-Centric Execution
Product Partnerships Lead · 45 min

  1. Describe how you operate independently on multiple deals. How do you prioritize, track technical work, and ensure timely escalation?
  2. Give an example where you identified a mismatch between prospect expectations and actual product fit. What options did you propose and how did you drive to validation?
  3. Tell me about a time you gathered prospect feedback and helped influence product direction. What was the impact of your feedback?

Red flags to watch for

  • Over-reliance on others for basic discovery, scoping, or integration explanations during customer-facing moments
  • Demos or proposals that do not map back to stated success criteria or customer workflows
  • Inability to clearly explain technical concepts to mixed audiences while preserving key details
  • Frequent missed deadlines or unresolved technical issues due to lack of independent execution
  • Responds to prospect concerns with only product statements instead of diagnosing the underlying problem and proposing options
