  • Review teammates’ code, propose pragmatic improvements, and help maintain engineering standards
  • Collaborate with product and engineering to translate requirements into technical designs
  • Troubleshoot production issues and drive fixes with clear root-cause analysis

Must-have qualifications

  • Production Python experience building backend services and APIs
  • Strong understanding of Python fundamentals including typing, packaging, and design patterns
  • Experience building and maintaining automated tests for backend code
  • Hands-on experience with SQL and relational databases (schema design and query optimization)
  • Working knowledge of RESTful API design and service integration
  • Ability to diagnose and remediate production issues using logs and monitoring

Nice to have

  • Experience with cloud services and deploying Python applications (e.g., containers or managed runtimes)
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and release automation for backend services
  • Familiarity with asynchronous programming or message-driven architectures

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Ship backend features that meet defined requirements
  • Improve reliability through reduced incident impact
  • Increase quality and test coverage on touched areas
  • Strengthen observability for faster troubleshooting
  • Maintain performant data access patterns

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver reliable, maintainable Python backend services that meet product needs and improve system quality over time.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Ship backend features that meet defined requirements. Measure: ship [N] backend features/epics that meet acceptance criteria
  • Improve reliability through reduced incident impact. Measure: reduce production incident frequency and/or impact by [X]%
  • Increase quality and test coverage on touched areas. Measure: raise automated test coverage (or test pass reliability) by [X]% on new/modified components
  • Strengthen observability for faster troubleshooting. Measure: instrument [N] services/components with actionable logs/metrics and achieve [X]% improvement in mean time to diagnose
  • Maintain performant data access patterns. Measure: improve key query latency and/or database throughput by [X]% for prioritized endpoints

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Python backend engineering · 26%
The role centers on independent development of backend services and APIs in Python. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Writes Python code that is hard to extend or lacks clear structure for common service needs.
  • Meets the bar: Builds backend components with clear interfaces and maintainable structure.
  • Strong: Designs and implements backend services with reusable patterns, strong abstractions, and consistent code quality.

Testing discipline · 19%
Automated tests are required to support reliable releases and safe iteration. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Relies primarily on manual testing or adds limited tests after changes.
  • Meets the bar: Implements unit/integration tests that validate expected behavior and edge cases.
  • Strong: Builds a pragmatic testing strategy that reduces regressions and accelerates debugging.

Production debugging · 19%
The role must diagnose and remediate production issues using logs and monitoring. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Uses trial-and-error without tying symptoms to logs/metrics; fixes lack demonstrated root cause.
  • Meets the bar: Identifies likely causes using logs/metrics, validates hypotheses, and applies targeted fixes.
  • Strong: Leads incident troubleshooting with clear root-cause analysis, prevention steps, and measurable follow-up.

SQL and data modeling · 17%
Backend services depend on correct schemas and efficient data access patterns. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Creates schemas and queries that lead to excessive load or frequent performance issues.
  • Meets the bar: Designs relational schemas and writes queries with acceptable performance and correctness.
  • Strong: Optimizes queries and models to meet performance targets while preserving data integrity.

REST API design · 13%
Candidates must design service interfaces that are consistent, predictable, and integrable. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Produces API designs with unclear contracts, inconsistent error handling, or problematic resource modeling.
  • Meets the bar: Designs RESTful endpoints with clear request/response contracts and sensible status codes.
  • Strong: Creates robust API contracts with thoughtful pagination/filtering, versioning strategy, and integration safety.

Independent delivery · 6%
Mid-level engineers must execute on well-defined work without needing heavy direction. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Waits for frequent direction or struggles to plan/finish well-scoped tasks.
  • Meets the bar: Breaks down work into deliverable steps, communicates progress, and completes tasks reliably.
  • Strong: Proactively clarifies requirements, anticipates risks, and delivers consistently with minimal supervision.
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Backend fundamentals and design
Backend Engineering Lead · 45 min

  1. Describe a Python backend service you built end-to-end. What design choices did you make for maintainability and extensibility?
  2. Walk through a schema or data model you designed. How did you ensure data integrity and how did you validate it in practice?
  3. Tell us about a time you refactored backend code. What triggered the refactor and how did you avoid introducing regressions?

Round 2: Quality and API contracts
Senior Software Engineer · 45 min

  1. What automated tests do you typically write for backend code (unit, integration, contract, etc.) and how do you decide what to cover?
  2. Describe an API contract you implemented or improved. How did you handle validation, error responses, and backward compatibility?
  3. Give an example where tests or monitoring helped you catch a bug early. What changed as a result?

Round 3: Production impact and troubleshooting
Engineering Manager · 45 min

  1. Tell us about a production incident you debugged. What signals did you use (logs/metrics), how did you narrow the scope, and what was the root cause?
  2. Describe how you would instrument a service to make future incidents easier to diagnose. What would you add and why?
  3. When you’re assigned well-defined work, how do you plan and drive it to completion? Share an example with concrete deliverables and outcomes.

Red flags to watch for

  • Cannot explain how they validated correctness and reliability in backend changes (e.g., limited or absent automated testing)
  • Relies on guesswork for production debugging without referencing logs/metrics or demonstrating root-cause thinking
  • Provides vague or inconsistent answers about API contracts, error handling, or how clients safely integrate
  • Struggles to discuss SQL/schema decisions in terms of correctness and performance tradeoffs
  • Demonstrates dependence on others to complete basic, well-scoped engineering tasks
