Power BI Developer

We’re looking for a mid-level Power BI Developer to build and maintain reliable, self-serve BI solutions for business stakeholders. You’ll turn data into clear dashboards and reports, improve data models for performance, and support ongoing enhancements based on user feedback.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop Power BI reports and dashboards for business users
  • Build and optimize semantic models (Power BI datasets) using star schemas and well-modeled relationships
  • Create and maintain data pipelines needed to support reporting (e.g., transforming data and refreshing datasets)
  • Implement measures, calculated columns/fields, and DAX logic that align with business definitions and reporting requirements
  • Manage report performance by optimizing visuals, queries, and model design
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, validate metric definitions, and refine report usability
  • Provide ongoing support for published content, including troubleshooting refresh issues and resolving data/reporting defects

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on experience building production Power BI reports and dashboards
  • Strong DAX skills, including writing and optimizing measures and calculated fields
  • Experience designing and optimizing Power BI semantic models (star schema, relationships, calculated measures)
  • Ability to design for data quality and consistent metric definitions across reports
  • Experience supporting dataset/report refreshes and troubleshooting ingestion or model issues
  • Experience working with tabular models and understanding of query/performance fundamentals (e.g., storage vs query behavior)

Nice to have

  • Experience with Azure services that support analytics (e.g., Azure SQL, Fabric/Power Platform components)
  • Familiarity with Power BI governance practices (workspaces, roles, deployment approaches)
  • Experience using SQL for data extraction and transformation for BI reporting

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Ship a portfolio of business-ready Power BI dashboards
  • Improve semantic model performance and usability
  • Standardize metrics and ensure consistent definitions
  • Increase data reliability for scheduled refreshes
  • Enable self-serve adoption and reduce manual reporting

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver dependable, high-performing Power BI reporting that enables accurate, self-serve decision-making for stakeholders.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Ship a portfolio of business-ready Power BI dashboards. Measure: Release [N] dashboards/reports with documented requirements and stakeholder sign-off
  • Improve semantic model performance and usability. Measure: Reduce report load time/user-visible refresh issues by [X]% and keep key datasets within agreed performance thresholds for [Y] consecutive months
  • Standardize metrics and ensure consistent definitions. Measure: Define and publish [N] metric standards and update existing reports to use them with accuracy confirmed in [N] validation sessions
  • Increase data reliability for scheduled refreshes. Measure: Achieve dataset refresh success rate of [X]% and reduce data-related incidents by [Y]%
  • Enable self-serve adoption and reduce manual reporting. Measure: Grow active usage to [N] monthly active users (or stakeholder teams) and reduce ad-hoc/manual requests by [X]%

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Power BI report delivery · 22%
The role’s core output is production-grade dashboards and reports that stakeholders can rely on. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Builds basic reports but struggles to meet performance or usability expectations consistently.
  • Meets the bar: Delivers clear reports that match requirements and are maintainable.
  • Strong: Delivers polished, production-ready reporting with thoughtful UX, consistent formatting, and predictable behavior across scenarios.

DAX measures mastery · 20%
Correct and efficient DAX is required to implement business logic and metric definitions. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Writes DAX that works for limited cases but causes incorrect results or performance problems.
  • Meets the bar: Creates accurate measures and calculated fields that match metric definitions.
  • Strong: Optimizes DAX for both correctness and performance, handling edge cases and filter context confidently.

Semantic modeling optimization · 18%
Well-modeled datasets drive performance, scalability, and consistent metric behavior. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Uses relationships/calculations that lead to ambiguity, duplication, or performance degradation.
  • Meets the bar: Designs coherent models (e.g., star schema) with understandable relationships and reuse.
  • Strong: Improves models through normalization decisions, relationship design, and query performance tuning while keeping them easy to extend.

Data quality and metric governance · 16%
Consistent definitions and validated data quality reduce rework and stakeholder distrust. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Relies on informal definitions and struggles to detect inconsistencies early.
  • Meets the bar: Validates assumptions, aligns measures to business definitions, and documents metric logic.
  • Strong: Proactively establishes validation checks and ensures consistent metric usage across multiple reports and teams.

Performance troubleshooting · 14%
The role must diagnose and fix issues affecting report behavior and refresh stability. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Addresses issues by trial-and-error and cannot explain root causes.
  • Meets the bar: Identifies common causes of failures or slow performance and applies targeted fixes.
  • Strong: Systematically traces symptoms to root causes across model, DAX, and refresh behavior, preventing recurrence.

Independent execution · 10%
Mid-level scope requires driving well-defined work without frequent guidance. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Needs frequent oversight to move work forward or clarify requirements.
  • Meets the bar: Plans and completes well-defined tasks independently while keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Strong: Takes ownership end-to-end, anticipates risks, and coordinates only as needed to unblock progress.
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Power BI Reporting & DAX
Lead BI Engineer · 45 min

  1. Describe a Power BI report you built for production use. What requirements did you gather, and how did you ensure the visuals were accurate and usable?
  2. Walk through how you would implement two related KPIs in DAX (e.g., revenue and margin). How do you ensure correct filter context and avoid common mistakes?
  3. Give an example where your first DAX approach produced incorrect results or unexpected totals. How did you diagnose and fix it?

Round 2: Semantic Modeling & Metrics Consistency
Data Architect · 45 min

  1. Explain how you design a star schema for Power BI. What decisions do you make about grain, relationships, and keys?
  2. How do you structure measures vs calculated columns in a semantic model to keep it maintainable and performant? Provide a concrete example.
  3. Describe a time you had to reconcile conflicting metric definitions between stakeholders. What steps did you take to align definitions and update reports consistently?

Round 3: Troubleshooting & Ownership
BI Operations Manager · 45 min

  1. Describe a dataset refresh failure you investigated. What evidence did you collect, what was the likely root cause, and how did you resolve it?
  2. When a report becomes slow, what is your troubleshooting process across visuals, semantic model design, and DAX?
  3. Tell us about a well-defined deliverable you owned independently. How did you plan, execute, validate, and communicate progress or risks?

Red flags to watch for

  • Relies on hard-coded values or manual steps to keep reports functioning instead of building reliable models and refresh logic
  • Cannot explain DAX filter context concepts (e.g., why totals differ from expected row-level results) or provides inconsistent metric logic explanations
  • Treats performance as an afterthought (e.g., no awareness of where bottlenecks originate in model/DAX/visuals)
  • Unable to describe how they validate accuracy and align metric definitions across multiple reports/users
