Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, and maintain Java services and REST APIs
  • Develop and refine database schemas and data access layers (e.g., SQL/JPA)
  • Write unit and integration tests to ensure correctness and prevent regressions
  • Troubleshoot production issues and contribute to incident resolution and post-incident follow-ups
  • Collaborate with teammates to define interfaces, validation rules, and API contracts
  • Improve application performance and reliability through profiling, tuning, and refactoring
  • Maintain clear documentation for services, APIs, and key implementation decisions

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on experience building production-grade backend services in Java
  • Experience designing and implementing REST APIs with clear request/response validation
  • Strong SQL fundamentals and experience with relational databases and data modeling
  • Ability to write effective automated tests (unit and integration) for backend services
  • Experience with common Java frameworks/libraries used for backend development (e.g., Spring)
  • Ability to debug and fix issues in logs, metrics, and application behavior in production

Nice to have

  • Experience with message-driven architecture (e.g., Kafka/RabbitMQ)
  • Experience with cloud platforms and deployment workflows (e.g., Docker and CI/CD)
  • Familiarity with performance tuning and profiling for JVM-based services
  • Experience with observability practices (structured logging, tracing, dashboards)

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Ship core backend features independently
  • Improve service reliability and reduce recurring issues
  • Increase code quality and test coverage for owned components
  • Strengthen API correctness and data integrity
  • Support operational excellence for your services

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver reliable Java backend services and APIs that meet product needs while maintaining high code quality and operational stability.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Ship core backend features independently. Measure: Deliver [N] backend features end-to-end with complete API contracts, tests, and documentation
  • Improve service reliability and reduce recurring issues. Measure: Reduce production incidents caused by code defects by [X]% over 12 months
  • Increase code quality and test coverage for owned components. Measure: Raise automated test coverage for owned services from baseline to [X]% (or increase by [X]%)
  • Strengthen API correctness and data integrity. Measure: Reduce API/schema-related defects (validation, serialization, data mapping) by [X]% while maintaining backward compatibility for existing clients
  • Support operational excellence for your services. Measure: Achieve an average incident response time of [X] minutes for your on-call/responsibility window and complete [N] post-incident follow-ups with actionable fixes

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Java backend delivery · 30%
Core requirement for mid-level independence delivering backend services in Java. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Completes small tasks but needs frequent review to implement core backend logic correctly
  • Meets the bar: Implements well-defined backend changes independently and follows the established patterns of the codebase
  • Strong: Designs and delivers backend features with minimal guidance, including edge cases and production considerations

REST API design · 20%
Ensures the candidate can produce correct, stable APIs with proper validation and contracts. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Creates inconsistent request/response handling and misses validation requirements
  • Meets the bar: Produces clear API contracts with appropriate validation and error responses
  • Strong: Anticipates client needs, maintains compatibility, and documents tradeoffs clearly

SQL and data modeling · 15%
Database correctness and efficient data access are required for backend work. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Writes queries that are logically correct but error-prone or inefficient without oversight
  • Meets the bar: Models data appropriately and writes correct, maintainable queries/data access code
  • Strong: Improves performance and data integrity through thoughtful schema/query design

Automated testing discipline · 15%
Prevents regressions and supports safe iteration on backend services. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Adds limited tests or tests that do not reliably validate behavior
  • Meets the bar: Writes unit and integration tests that cover key scenarios for owned changes
  • Strong: Builds robust test suites that catch edge cases and reduce future defect rate

Production debugging · 10%
Mid-level role must handle troubleshooting using logs and runtime behavior. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Struggles to narrow down causes of issues and relies heavily on others
  • Meets the bar: Identifies root cause using logs/metrics and applies a fix with verification
  • Strong: Leads effective diagnosis, prevents recurrence, and communicates findings clearly

Collaboration and ownership · 10%
Mid-level independence still requires coordination and delivery across the team. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Needs frequent guidance and communicates late or ambiguously
  • Meets the bar: Proactively coordinates on interfaces, updates stakeholders, and owns delivery
  • Strong: Drives clarity, aligns on tradeoffs, and prevents rework through early communication
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Backend foundation interview
Backend Engineer · 60 min

  1. Tell us about a Java backend service you built or significantly improved. What was your contribution, and how did you ensure it was production-ready?
  2. Describe a REST API you designed. How did you handle validation, error responses, and backward compatibility?
  3. Walk through an example of how you structured a Java service for maintainability (e.g., layering, packages, or separation of concerns).

Round 2: Data and testing interview
Senior Software Engineer · 60 min

  1. Explain a database schema/data model you designed. What constraints or relationships did you choose, and why?
  2. Describe how you wrote and verified SQL queries or ORM mappings (e.g., JPA). What was the most common failure mode you guarded against?
  3. Give an example of a bug you prevented (or would have prevented) using unit and integration tests. What did you test and how did you structure it?

Round 3: Production readiness interview
Staff/Lead Engineer · 60 min

  1. Tell us about a production incident you helped resolve. How did you use logs/metrics/runtime behavior to identify the root cause?
  2. Describe how you approach debugging in a JVM-based system (e.g., isolating the problem, verifying the fix, and checking for regressions).
  3. How do you manage ownership when a feature spans multiple services or teams? Share an example where you coordinated interfaces and avoided rework.

Red flags to watch for

  • Relies on others for core Java backend implementation and cannot explain how they make services production-ready
  • Cannot describe how their APIs handle validation, error responses, or compatibility concerns
  • Has difficulty explaining SQL/data modeling decisions or shows a pattern of inefficient/incorrect data access
  • Provides little evidence of meaningful automated tests or cannot explain their testing strategy and tradeoffs
  • Cannot discuss a real debugging/production fix with clear reasoning and verification
