Flutter Developer

Build and maintain high-quality Flutter mobile experiences that are reliable, performant, and easy to evolve. You’ll work independently on well-defined features, collaborating with backend, design, and QA to deliver polished releases.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain Flutter applications and reusable UI components following established patterns
  • Implement and integrate mobile features with backend APIs, including authentication and data synchronization flows
  • Improve app performance and responsiveness (startup time, scrolling performance, state updates) and reduce defects
  • Write maintainable Dart code with clear architecture, state management, and testing practices
  • Participate in design reviews and translate UX requirements into consistent mobile interactions
  • Collaborate with QA to reproduce, triage, and resolve bugs; validate fixes before release
  • Document work clearly (component behavior, API contracts, and key architectural decisions)

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on experience building production Flutter apps with Dart
  • Strong understanding of Flutter widget architecture and responsive UI development
  • Proficiency with state management in Flutter (e.g., Provider, Riverpod, Bloc)
  • Experience integrating mobile apps with REST APIs and handling common networking concerns
  • Ability to debug mobile issues using logs, profilers, and crash/analytics signals
  • Working knowledge of Git-based collaboration and code review practices

Nice to have

  • Experience with CI/CD for mobile (build, test, release)
  • Familiarity with automated testing in Flutter (unit/widget/integration tests)
  • Knowledge of performance optimization techniques for Flutter apps (rendering, caching, image optimization)
  • Experience with app store release workflows and release versioning practices

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Feature delivery with high quality
  • Improved reliability and reduced defect rate
  • Performance and UX responsiveness improvements
  • Maintainable architecture and test coverage
  • Effective collaboration and maintainable documentation

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver reliable, performant Flutter features independently by translating product needs into well-architected mobile code.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Feature delivery with high quality. Measure: ship [N] mobile features or components with acceptance rate of [X]% and zero critical regressions
  • Improved reliability and reduced defect rate. Measure: reduce production crashes/incidents by [X]% over 12 months
  • Performance and UX responsiveness improvements. Measure: improve key performance metric (e.g., screen load time or frame drops) by [X]% versus baseline after stabilization
  • Maintainable architecture and test coverage. Measure: increase automated test coverage for new/modified areas to [X]% and maintain consistent state management patterns
  • Effective collaboration and maintainable documentation. Measure: deliver change documentation for [X] releases and resolve QA-reported issues within [Y] business days on average

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Flutter production delivery · 28%
The role is expected to work independently delivering Flutter features in production-quality code. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Completes small UI changes but needs frequent guidance on architecture, integration, or debugging
  • Meets the bar: Builds well-defined features end-to-end and can explain key design choices
  • Strong: Independently delivers complete features with clean architecture, anticipates edge cases, and prevents regressions

State management mastery · 19%
Correct state handling is essential for reliability and maintainable UI behavior. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Uses state inconsistently or struggles to prevent stale UI/data
  • Meets the bar: Applies a state management approach appropriately for the feature and avoids common state bugs
  • Strong: Designs predictable state flows, handles async/data lifecycle cleanly, and simplifies UI updates

API integration reliability · 17%
Mobile features depend on robust networking, error handling, and data synchronization. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Implements basic API calls but handles errors, retries, or auth inconsistently
  • Meets the bar: Integrates REST APIs with correct request/response handling and practical error states
  • Strong: Builds resilient integration with robust auth handling, clear failure modes, and thoughtful retry/backoff behavior

Debugging and performance · 17%
You must quickly diagnose issues and improve responsiveness in Flutter apps. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Relies on guesswork or limited logging to debug
  • Meets the bar: Uses logs/profilers/crash signals to identify root cause and validate fixes
  • Strong: Systematically isolates performance bottlenecks, validates improvements with evidence, and prevents recurrence

Code quality and reviews · 13%
Working independently still requires maintainable code, clear PRs, and effective collaboration. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Code is difficult to understand or reviews depend heavily on others
  • Meets the bar: Writes readable Dart code and participates effectively in code reviews and collaboration
  • Strong: Proactively improves code through refactors, clear PRs, and aligns with team standards

Product-minded UX implementation · 6%
Strong candidates translate UX requirements into consistent mobile interactions and edge-case handling. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Implements screens without consistently matching interaction/UX requirements
  • Meets the bar: Delivers UI behavior consistent with design requirements and handles typical edge cases
  • Strong: Anticipates UX edge cases (loading/error/empty states) and improves overall user experience
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Flutter and API foundations
Engineering Lead · 60 min

  1. Tell me about a Flutter feature you shipped end-to-end in production—what was the architecture, and how did you manage the integration details?
  2. Describe how you handle REST API calls in Flutter, including authentication, request/response parsing, and failure/empty/loading UI states.
  3. Give an example of a tricky bug related to networking (timeouts, retries, or stale data). How did you identify the root cause and verify the fix?

Round 2: State management and code quality
Senior Mobile Engineer · 60 min

  1. Walk through how you designed state for a screen with multiple async operations (e.g., load + refresh + pagination). What state model did you use and why?
  2. How do you structure Flutter widgets to keep UI logic maintainable? Describe a refactor you made to improve state/UI separation.
  3. Tell me about a code review you received that changed how you build Flutter features. What did you adjust in your approach?

Round 3: Debugging, performance, and outcomes
QA/Release Engineer · 60 min

  1. Describe a time you used crash/analytics or logs to debug a production issue. What evidence did you use and what was the outcome?
  2. Tell me about a Flutter performance problem you improved (e.g., jank, slow navigation, heavy lists). What steps did you take to measure and fix it?
  3. How do you ensure your changes don’t introduce regressions—what validation do you run or what signals do you rely on?

Red flags to watch for

  • Frequent inability to explain architectural decisions or how state flows through the app
  • Over-reliance on trial-and-error debugging without using logs/profilers/crash signals
  • Inconsistent handling of error/loading/empty states for API-driven screens
  • Difficulty describing real production integrations (auth, networking, and failure modes)
  • Code that is hard to read or heavily dependent on ad-hoc fixes rather than maintainable patterns
