Data Engineer

We’re hiring a Mid-level Data Engineer to design, build, and maintain reliable data pipelines that power analytics and downstream applications. You’ll work independently on well-defined scopes, partner with data stakeholders, and ensure data quality, performance, and maintainability across the stack.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement data pipelines for batch and/or streaming use cases using modern data engineering practices
  • Model and transform data to support analytics needs and well-defined business questions
  • Build and maintain ingestion, processing, and orchestration workflows with clear monitoring and operational visibility
  • Create and enforce data quality checks, validation rules, and data contracts with stakeholders
  • Optimize pipeline performance (latency, throughput, and cost) based on observed system behavior
  • Collaborate with analytics, product, and engineering teams to translate requirements into technical solutions
  • Document pipeline architecture, data flow, and runbooks to support ongoing operations

Must-have qualifications

  • Hands-on experience designing and building production data pipelines
  • Proficiency with SQL and strong data modeling skills
  • Experience with at least one orchestration/workflow tool for data pipelines in production
  • Ability to implement data quality checks and validation at pipeline time
  • Experience with cloud data services and deployment in a production environment
  • Strong debugging and incident response skills for data pipeline failures

Nice to have

  • Experience with streaming or near-real-time pipeline architectures
  • Familiarity with data governance practices (data contracts, lineage, access patterns)
  • Experience with Python for data engineering tasks (transformations, tooling, automation)
  • Comfort using observability tools (logging/metrics/tracing) to monitor data health

What success looks like in 12 months

  • Production pipelines are stable and observable
  • Data quality is measurable and enforced
  • Stakeholder-ready datasets are delivered on time
  • Performance and cost are improved through targeted optimization
  • Operational maturity increases with documentation and runbooks

Logistics

  • Full-time (40 hours a week), remote from Latin America.
  • Working hours overlap with US business hours.

Interview scorecard

Score every candidate against the same bar

Deliver dependable, well-instrumented data pipelines that improve the quality and usability of data for analytics and product needs.

Outcomes to measure

What this hire should deliver in the first year. Replace [N] with your own targets.

  • Production pipelines are stable and observable. Measure: Maintain pipeline reliability of [X]% with monitoring coverage for [Y]% of critical pipeline stages
  • Data quality is measurable and enforced. Measure: Reduce data quality incidents by [X]% and implement validation coverage for [Y]% of datasets with defined expectations
  • Stakeholder-ready datasets are delivered on time. Measure: Ship [N] stakeholder-requested datasets or data products that meet agreed specifications and SLAs
  • Performance and cost are improved through targeted optimization. Measure: Improve pipeline end-to-end latency by [X]% and/or reduce pipeline processing cost by [Y]% for scoped workloads
  • Operational maturity increases with documentation and runbooks. Measure: Create and maintain runbooks/runbook links for [N] critical pipelines and reduce mean time to acknowledge/resolve data incidents by [X]%

Competencies and weights

What to evaluate, how much it counts and what a strong answer looks like.

Production pipeline design · 24%
This role owns well-defined scopes; success depends on turning requirements into reliable pipeline architecture. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Builds pipelines without clear handling for failure modes or operational concerns
  • Meets the bar: Designs pipelines with appropriate staging, retries, and maintainable structure
  • Strong: Designs end-to-end pipeline architecture with robust error handling, idempotency, and clear data flow guarantees

SQL and data modeling · 19%
Strong SQL and modeling are required to transform data accurately and support downstream consumption. Evaluated in Round 1.

  • Weak: Uses SQL that is difficult to validate or maintain; modeling choices lead to frequent inconsistencies
  • Meets the bar: Writes correct, maintainable SQL and uses modeling patterns that match requirements
  • Strong: Designs modeling that prevents anomalies (e.g., duplicates/partial updates) and enables efficient, correct analytics queries

Data quality and validation · 19%
Preventing bad data and detecting issues early directly impacts stakeholder trust and reduces incidents. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Adds limited checks; failures are discovered only downstream
  • Meets the bar: Implements validation rules and clear failure signaling tied to pipeline stages
  • Strong: Implements layered quality gates and evidence-based diagnostics that speed up root-cause analysis

Workflow orchestration · 17%
Orchestrating production pipelines is central to reliability, scheduling, and operational control. Evaluated in Round 2.

  • Weak: Relies on manual intervention for schedule/ordering or lacks control for dependencies
  • Meets the bar: Configures orchestration with retries, dependencies, and environment separation
  • Strong: Implements orchestration patterns that ensure deterministic runs (e.g., backfills) and consistent behavior across environments

Debugging and incident response · 15%
Mid-level engineers must independently debug and resolve production data issues. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Troubleshoots slowly or makes changes without isolating the cause
  • Meets the bar: Diagnoses failures using logs/metrics, validates hypotheses, and applies corrective actions
  • Strong: Leads fast root-cause analysis, documents learnings, and prevents recurrence with targeted safeguards

Cloud production engineering · 6%
Cloud deployment knowledge is needed to operate pipelines reliably in the production environment. Evaluated in Round 3.

  • Weak: Limited understanding of cloud runtime constraints or deployment practices
  • Meets the bar: Deploys and operates pipelines using appropriate cloud services and permissions
  • Strong: Designs for reliability and security in cloud environments (least privilege, environment controls, reproducible deployments)
Interview questions

Questions for every interview round

Each round has an owner, a time box and questions that test the competencies above.

Round 1: Data modeling & pipeline foundations
Data Engineering Lead · 60 min

  1. Walk through a production data pipeline you designed: what were the inputs, transformations, and outputs, and how did you ensure correctness end to end?
  2. Describe your approach to data modeling for analytics use cases (e.g., dimensional vs. normalized choices). How do you handle updates, deduplication, and data consistency?
  3. Give an example of a complex SQL transformation you implemented. How did you validate that the results were correct and performant?

Round 2: Orchestration & quality systems
Senior Data Engineer · 60 min

  1. Which orchestration/workflow tool have you used in production, and how did you structure DAGs/jobs for dependencies, retries, and backfills?
  2. Explain how you implemented data quality checks in a pipeline. What types of validations did you use (schema, freshness, nulls, reconciliation), and how did you decide thresholds?
  3. Tell us about a time quality checks caught a real issue. How did you diagnose it and prevent it from recurring?

Round 3: Production troubleshooting & cloud operations
Engineering Manager · 60 min

  1. Describe a data pipeline incident you handled in production. How did you identify the failing component, confirm root cause, and implement a lasting fix?
  2. How do you monitor data pipeline health (e.g., logs/metrics/alerts) and decide what signals matter most for detection and triage?
  3. What cloud-related deployment or operational constraints have you dealt with (e.g., permissions, environment separation, scaling), and how did you address them?

Red flags to watch for

  • Cannot describe how they validated correctness of SQL/models beyond manual checks
  • Treats pipeline failures as expected without retries, idempotency, or clear failure handling
  • Relies on downstream consumers to discover data quality issues rather than implementing pipeline-time validations
  • Limited evidence of independent debugging during production incidents (needs constant escalation)
